Sometimes things work out just perfectly

Joel Ortiz has a passion for photography. After more than 30 years of photographing everything from sunsets and landscapes to portraits and weddings, it never gets old.

“I still get super excited to capture images that inspire my photography students and fans,” said Joel, who also teaches university courses on English as a Second Language. “I look forward to trying new techniques and new camera gear when possible.”

One of Joel’s more stunning and recent photographs was of a fireworks display that he took during a special event on the flight deck of the USS Midway Museum. The nearly symmetrically perfect photograph was taken from Harbor Island using a Sony A7CR camera and a Sigma 150-600 mm lens.

“I was extremely excited that I got this shot because it was probably my best grand finale (fireworks) shot ever,” said Joel, whose photography hobby turned into a profession three decades ago. “I was so rushed that I hadn’t noticed that the moon showed up partially on the far right of the frame. This is extremely rare to see the fireworks and moon in the same frame.”

Joel spends as much time as he can with his camera and feels that San Diego is the a perfect blank canvas for his photography.

“What I really love about photography is definitely seeing how nature creates art and I’m just basically copying what nature has done,” said Joel, who has lived in San Diego for 50 years. “My passion comes from just seeing the art that is already there, and I’m just borrowing that art and sharing it with the world.”
